Computer Viruses
Computer viruses are a plague to modern society. Computer viruses make no sense to me. Why would someone who is obviously intelligent enough to create what is sometimes a very sophisticated piece of computer code, do something so mean spirited as to write and send out a computer virus that can cause untold harm to people and their computers? What causes someone to write and distribute computer viruses? What type of thinking is going on in their heads as they create computer viruses?
What could possibly possess someone to spend their time creating computer viruses? There is no money in it, generally, unless they create computer viruses as a means of extorting money form companies whom they threaten to target with their computer viruses, but all of that is very illegal behavior and punishable by many years in jail and it doesn’t seem like a lot of that is going on or at least the general public is not being made aware of it if it is. No, it doesn’t appear that those who are crating computer viruses are in it for the money. Maybe they create computer viruses for the challenge of it. If they do, it seems it would be much better if they would find more constructive and less harmful ways of challenging themselves.
Computer viruses cost businesses millions upon millions of dollars per year in lost productivity and damaged and lost business records. Computer viruses have fueled the computer security industry which is now another business expense that gets passed along to the consumer in the form of higher prices and the need to purchase anti-virus software. Maybe those who are creating and disseminating these computer viruses think they are only hurting companies which perhaps they see as evil, but they are hurting everyone else as well by driving up the price of everything as a result of their computer viruses.
There are some precautions you can take to avoid having your own personal computer damaged by computer viruses. First of all, do not open any emails from addresses you don not recognize. Of course, some of the computer viruses get into people’s computers and commandeer their contact lists and send emails out form the person’s address, hoping that their friends will open it and infect their computers with their computer viruses. But you can avoid the obvious ones from unknown addresses. A lot of these unsolicited emails which contain computer viruses have titillating subject headlines offering you free nude pictures and the like. Don’t fall for it. Just delete these emails and report them to your email service provider.
