Computers have invaded every aspect of modern society. Computers have become integral to the practice of medicine and to the conduct of business of all types. Computers are ingrained in our methods of communication and education. And computers are becoming more and more present in art and music. Computers for art and music are both a medium for creative expression and a means of delivery of art and music.

There was a time in the history of man and it was not that long ago, when there were no computers. All art and music existed without computers. Performers and artists created and delivered their creations to the public without the use of computers. No art was generated on the computer, no was any manipulated, stored or delivered by way of computers as there were no computers for art and music. Music was produced, recorded and delivered entirely without the use of computers as we lived in an analog world. Boy how things have changed…

Music has probably been the most profoundly affected by computers for art and music. It is hard to conceive of the music industry existing without computers. Artists and producers make extensive use of computers to create and manipulate their music. Many of the sounds and most of the effects in modern recording technology makes wide use of computers, but computers for art and music doesn’t just refer to the creative side. Computers for art and music also have had a profound affect on the delivery of music, photography and video.

Before the explosion of use of computers for art and music, music was recorded to some physical medium like vinyl records or cassette tapes to be sold to the consumer. This method kept the record companies squarely in control of the production and distribution of music and it made them all fortunes many times over. but now with the widespread use of computers for art and music, the record companies are no longer able to control the distribution of music like they once were. The revenues of record companies and record stores have been drastically affected with many now teetering on the brink of bankruptcy due to their inability to adapt and their lack of control of free file sharing of what was once their sole proprietary property, but now, thanks to computers for art and music, is out of their control.

Visual artists are also able to expand their creative methods with the use of computers for arts and music and whole new art forms have arisen due to this technology. Although the artwork can be seen by a wider audience through the use of computers and the internet, visual art is more often still produced by the artist in a physical form so that it can be exhibited in person and original pieces can be sold to individuals.
