Computers are a fact of life in the modern world. In the developed countries, almost every household has at least one computer. Kids spend, on average, three to four hours a day in front of a computer screen for one purpose or another. they play computer games, do school work, and email and chat with each other for hours each day. Almost every business has computers. They have computers for record keeping and billing. They have computers for communicating. And many businesses are in the computer industry, servicing, selling and manufacturing computers. There is not an area of modern society that hasn’t been touched by computers. Medicine, communications, manufacturing, the arts, education, entertainment and commerce all use computers to some extent.
Some of these areas of society are even completely dependent upon computers and some segments of modern society wouldn’t even exist without computers. For example, the field of modern medicine is heavily dependent upon computers now as all the mundane, time consuming tasks of record keeping for accounts receivable and payable have been computerized. Also, medical chart notes and patient files are very often kept in computer files and not on paper. And with all the government and insurance requirement these days, computers are a necessity. In the field of medicine, computers have also made their way into diagnostics, computer enhanced imaging is widely used and relied upon to scan and depict peoples internal organs. Computers provided a vital service in the diagnosing and treatment of many diseases and conditions. Computers have also become part of the family doctor’s daily life. Many doctors’ offices use handheld devices all linked to a central computer where their medical records reside. The handheld devices also contain and link the doctor to vital information resources that help her treat her patients more effectively and efficiently. These are examples of uses of computers in just one professional area. The same uses and more exist in all other areas of work and home throughout society.
Thirty years ago, computers were a rare thing and now, computers are in widespread use and often perform vital services in many industries. Computers have gone from huge central frame computers to small mobile, yet powerful machines that can work alone or in tandem with other computers to perform complex and amazing functions. computers have truly changed the face of modern society.
