What do all of these computer names have in common? Latitude, Inspiron, XPS, Dimension, Precision, Optiplex, and Vostro? Ok, now one last hint… these computers started out black. Do you have a guess?
If you haven’t figured it out yet, you are looking at several names of Dell computers. Dell has been in business since 1984. Since then they have delivered some of the best selling desktop and laptop (or notebook) computers.
A huge part of the success Dell has seen has come from the low prices, the large selection and the financing they offer. At one point, Dell desktops were as cheap as $299 with a monitor, keyboard, and mouse. This is a complete setup, and thousands of these were sold. The offer was very active for a few years, with specials like this often running during tax return season and the beginning of the school year.
Dell has continuously offered laptops for very low prices as well. Even today you can find them for as little as $550. Of course they are not the top of the line, but they are more than adequate for web surfing, e-mail, word processing and playing music. There are also many customizations you can make to any computer you purchase through Dell. Once you choose a system to start with you are taken through at least 10 levels of customization to give you ideas of what else you might need on the computer.
There are almost always some kinds of specials and coupons available for Dell computers, both the laptops and the desktops, and the coupons are for the home and small business sections of the Dell site. You can find them all over the Internet, but a great place to start would be www.retailmenot.com
Financing is available through Dell’s own site. They offer different interest rates depending on how good your credit is. Although sometimes the interest rates are quite high (up to 30%) this would be only for those who could probably not find credit for computers anywhere else, and have low credit scores.
Many people remain Dell customers for several years and several purchases. The computers are relatively cheap with several options to add if you want more than the base system. There are several options available as far as customer care and technical support, and even full warranties that will replace the computer if you damage it.
As of 2007 Dell started offering systems that included Linux operating systems instead of Windows. For most of the life of the company the only operating systems available have been Microsoft Windows with no other options, except the different levels, such as business, premium, home, etc.
Every year Dell releases better looking and more top of the line computers that compete very well with other companies, such as Apple, and Gateway. They have suffered some customer service problems with people complaining about the treatment they have received from the computer company. However it seems they have begun a healthy recovery of this and will continue to achieve more success as they offer more choices and better customer service.
