History Of Linux
Everybody knows that linux is about freedom. It means that humans are not bonded to commercialization. They can create free software and systems for the use of the entire human community and that too completely free of charge. Each and every person is invited and is free to develop this software and system still further. How did this freedom moment start? What were the important milestones in the history of linux? Let us consider all this in this small article about history of linux.
First let us consider the well known facts. This linux idea started in 1991 with the release of linux kernel and its source code. At that time it had a small number of C files in it. The license had prohibited the commercial distribution of this linux. Now in the year 2007 there was 290 megabytes of source under this GNU general public license. This is tremendous growth. It is historical development. Of course everything was not like this in the prehistoric times.
In 1960 Unix operating system was developed. It was released in 1970. It was available widely. It was portable. It was adopted and copied by lot many people.
It was modified by both academicians and businessmen. This was the base from which others based their operating systems. It was in 1983 that the work on the linux was started by Richard Stallman. The aim was to create free UNIX like system. As a part of this, the GNU public license was written. By 1990, there was enough material to make this linux operating system. But the point is that developers were not aware of this. There was linux kernel called as hurd available. But the developers never got any attention on this hurd.
In 1980 there was another attempt for creating UNIX like free operating system this was by Berkley Software Distribution. But the owners of UNIX had sued this Berkley software distribution firm. This slowed down all the attempts at developing free operating system from the base of UNIX. Minix was another system developed by the academicians. It was 16 bit design. You can not adapt it for 32 bit design. The time was now ripe for the creation of linux kernel.
In 1991 the project which was later called as linux kernel. Linus Travoulds had started this project. On 25august 1991 he posted this in a news group in Usenet.
This was the birth of this linux kernel. Originally this was named as Freax. Linus initially thought that name linux will seem too much egoistical. His coworkers had renamed this freax as linux without his consent. Later this name was accepted by Linus. This is the small account of history of linux.
