As for credit reports, you are allowed one free credit report per year. By checking your credit report you can find signs of whether you may be a victim of identity theft.
To help prevent identity theft and reduce the risk over the internet, installing a firewall on your computer will stop hackers from obtaining personal information from your hard drive. You should also install virus protection software and keep it updated to help prevent viruses and worms from sending out files.
Identity theft has become increasingly apparent through email phishing, so be aware of these kinds of emails. Identity theft prevention can easily be done by not responding to these emails, and not opening any attachments added to them. You can pick up on these kinds of emails because they appear to be from paypal or your bank, and they ask you to confirm your account and provide personal information.
Lastly, to prevent identity theft you can reduce the amount of access criminals have to your personal information. By not carrying your social security card in your wallet and not carrying extra credit cards in your wallet or purse, it makes it less likely the information will be stolen. Also, when you order new checks you should pick them up at the bank so thieves are unaware of where you live.
Although it is impossible to completely prevent identity theft, there are hundreds of ways to prevent it from happening to you. There are many identity theft preventions for reducing access to your personal information, internet and computer safeguards you can use, and ways to protect your credit cards, social security number and passwords. The best way to prevent identity theft is to be aware of how you handle your personal information.
