What is the meaning of the word proxy? This means that you do something for somebody else. For example you are entitled to vote as a shareholder of the company. But you tell somebody to vote on your behalf. This will become proxy voting and the person will be termed as a proxy voter. Similarly the proxy server will do the functions of the sever for him. You can explain the work of this proxy server using a network diagram. The term network diagram proxy server means a net work diagram that explains the working of the proxy server.

The one important point to note in the above example in proxy voting is that the proxy voter is authorized to vote on your behalf. The proxy means somebody does the functions of other person/software/system after getting due authority. In case of the proxy server, there are two types of servers. The first type of the proxy server is called as the forward proxy server. The second type of the proxy server is called as the reverse proxy server. The client wants the proxy server to redirect the requests for the website to a number of servers. In this case the proxy server used is called as the reverse proxy server.

There are number of clients on the one hand and you have to supply them internet access to them on the other hand. If you use one single server for this purpose then it is called as the forward proxy server. What really happens in case of the forward proxy server is as follows. In your usual web access what happens is 1] client sends request for your you.com. 2] This you.com replies to the client.

But when you use the forward proxy server then what happens is that 1] the client sends the request for the you.com to the proxy server. 2] This proxy server sends the request to the you.com 3] the you.com sends the reply to the proxy server. 4] The proxy server sends the reply to the client.

The network diagram for these types of forward proxy sever is very simple. There are clients on the one hand connected to the proxy server and there is two way communications between the proxy server and the internet. Why are these type of forward proxy servers used? The basic functions include the security as the most important one. The proxy server is used as the gateway to the internet. This is a single machine. This makes it possible to make it an authenticated gateway. So it can work through firewalls and still provide direct internet access to the clients. Catching and filtering are other two important functions of this network diagram proxy server.
