The network server repeater is also called as the network server hub. You can say that this is the simplest form of the networking infrastructure. The network server repeater has number of ports. These ports are connected to your computer by a wire. The network server repeater receives something on one of its port and it simultaneously repeats that to other ports on the repeater.

If a computer wants to talk to network, then first thing it does is confirm that nobody else is talking. If nobody is talking, then it starts talking. This signal is repeated in the every computer connected to the network server repeater. This signal is called as a carrier. If two computers decide to talk at the same time, then what will happen? There will be collision of the two signals. This is called as the error condition called as network collision. When the collision error condition takes place, then both the computers stop talking for some time. This waiting time is a random time. After waiting for some time, they start talking again. They have to make it sure that only one computer talks at one time. When the computer finishes sending the talking signal, it starts sending streams of data down the wire.

This data is divided into logical units called as packets. These packets indicate from where the data has come and where is it going.

This is network speaking method and its name is CSMA/CD. It is short forming of carrier sense multiple accesses with collision detection. When two computers start talking at the same time, then it will have to decide which should talk first.

It is like the phone conversation party. The people wait and allow one person to talk first. This reaches simultaneously to all the people in the party. It is negotiated who should talk first. If somebody tries to interrupt then this whole procedure will have to be repeated.

The first point to be noted is that there are no secrets of any kind at all. All the conversation is carried to ALL the computers. This is the basis of the Ethernet technology. This type of technology is used in most local networks. As the network goes on increasing the number of collisions will go on increasing. There can be a time at which the number of collisions will be far greater than the number of successful talks. It is obvious that system will go on becoming inefficient as more computers are added to it. As every signal is sent to the entire computer net work, it becomes inefficient and insecure. The limitations of the network server repeater are pretty obvious. But this sort of network server repeater is useful for the small organizations whose server needs are very small.
