Perpendicular Recording Of Ibm Laptops

Excerpt: the Shu-ichi Iwasaki designed the perpendicular recording for the first time at the Tohoku institute in Japan. It is a technology enables the storage of about 230 gigabits per square inch or a maximum of 20 GB on a 1-inch micro drive. From the time when the IBM had introduced the RAMAC drive, there has been a great increase in their storage capacity. The RAMAC had the capacity of 1800 bits per square inch but at present, it is about 100 gigabits per square inch.

Advantages

This increase in the capacity of the hard disk drives enabled them to host new applications like the application of video and audio.

This increase in the capacity was possible because of the perpendicular recording. The previous horizontal and longitudinal recording used the end to end laying of the magnetized regions. This makes them arranged in concentric circles around the hard disk. However, in the perpendicular recording technology, the arrangement of small magnetic regions is vertically perpendicular to each other so that there is utilization of the smallest possible area of the hard disk and the capacity is increased. In addition, in addition this it is possible to shrink the regions for magnetizing them to record the ones and the zeroes. The magnetic field of the films used in the perpendicular recording is stronger and hence it provides better accuracy. It has a higher resistance from the heat.

Problems

However, it initially had some backdrops. The technology mix that we require for the reading and writing of the perpendicular magnetic regions sometimes was not reliable. As for it a “Soft” magnetic under layer is needed bellow the magnetic film where the digital ones and zeroes get recorded. A magnetic field magnetizes this soft magnetic under layer easily. Once the magnetic field magnetizes it, it starts affecting the magnetic film above it in which the data is present.

But presently the technology for the manufacture of these films has advanced. Now a days film which magnetic fields the magnetic fields do not affect and in addition to this are thinner than the previous have come up in the market. Once this problem got solved the use of perpendicular technology for recording ahs increased a lot.

The developers are truing to shrink the size of the magnetic regions and pattern the magnetic fields. In the near future, there is possibility that the capacity of the hard disks may reach to 300 gigabits per square inch.
