Innovation is always in lag with necessity and at times a strong problem that needs solution, takes a long time. There are no simple fixes for the power and thermal subjects that have been challenging data centers from the dot-com boom. It has taken years for chip and server makers to not only face the troubles, but to start the work of manufacturing new machines those are not only efficient but have energy management as their core feature.

Despite of rising demand for handheld PCs and other mobile devices, users frequently prefer notebooks’ keyboards and screens when checking emails or making PowerPoint presentations. The challenge has been to improve battery lives while making the machines with more power hungry CPUs and graphics processors.

To provide the same capabilities that high-powered desktops offer in a notebook form which can run on battery alone during a full workday or intercontinental plane ride. Unfortunately, the gap remains between ultra-high performance, power-draining processing power, and long notebook battery lives.

It’s a combat between end user needs for increased battery life and improvements in technology that at times want more power. To reduce the power consumption, the power of CPU, graphics processors and also other components has to drop down. Hence, for a larger battery life, a trade-off in performance is necessary. It may take longer time to do things, but if something takes 4 seconds instead of 2 seconds and your battery lasts for another 45 minutes, it’s a good trade-off.

The Notebooks from IBM offers one of the longest battery lives. The IBM T Series with its large battery gives around 6 hours battery life. Because of the trade-off, the product is somewhat slow to use, especially when one runs antispams and anti-spywares. Once the applications start running, the performance becomes usual hence users can get used to it.

IBM’s ThinkPad T43 is 4.5 pounds in weight and is equipped with an Intel Centrino processor that has up to 2GB of DDR2 system memory. According to IBM, the new T43 can provide 8 hours battery life while running office applications, considering Internet connectivity with an 802.11 connection.
