S Video Connections On Ibm Laptops

Separate video, abbreviated S-Video is an analog video signal which carries the video data as 2 separate signals for brightness and color rather than composite video which carries the complete set of signals in one signal line. S-Video carries high-bandwidth 480i or 576i resolution video. Component video cables are usually used to carry bandwidths over the resolutions supported by an S-Video cable and many devices will have both S-Video and component video inputs along with the composite video input. S-Video does not have audio on the same cable.

The 4-pin mini-DIN connectors are common on TVs, VCRs, and DVD players. The 7-pin quasi-DIN connectors are more common on computers. The 7-pin socket accepts the 4-pin plug and the S-video signals are available on the matching pins. When a 7-pin plug is inserted, one of the extra pins carries a composite CVBS video signal for non S-video displays. Some graphics cards need the remaining 2 pins to be shorted together to enable the CVBS mode.

The 7-pin plug has a longer locating lug making it difficult to insert it in a 4 pin socket. Damage to the plug and socket is unavoidable if the plug is enforced into the socket.

S-Video is commonly used all over the world. It is found on consumer TVs, DVD players, Digital TV receivers, DVRs, high-end video cassette recorders and game consoles. Roughly all TV-out connectors on graphics cards are S-Video. In European consumer goods, they are less frequently used as Europeans use the superior RGB component video available via the popular SCART connectors.

The IBM provides Windows XP with dual output video card and matching pins on the PC and TV connections. To start it, you have to connect the TV to the video card by turning off the computer. Then, by switching on the TV, you have to set it to the proper input for the S-video connection. After that, you can start the laptop.
